Top Essay writing Tips

For Essay paper, you need to focus on four areas.


1. English Grammar

2. English Vocabulary 

3. Ideas/Knowledge 

4. Essay Structure 


1. English Grammar: First of all you need to focus and improve your English Grammar. You need to work on correct usage and punctuation. You must learn how to write grammatically correct sentences and your sentence structure must be correct. So there are three sub categories to cover in this portion:

(i) Correct usage 

(ii) Sentence Structure 

(iii) Punctuation 

To cover this area, I referred to following books:

(i) Wren and Martin

(ii) Practical English Grammar by Thomson and Martinet 

(iii) Superior English Grammar by an Indian author (it is very hard to find this book in market)

(iv) Grammar portion from Exploring the world of English by Saadat Ali Shah 


2. English Vocabulary:  Vocabulary is of two types: one that you remember for Mcqs portion of Precis and Composition paper and the other that you use in your essay. The Vocabulary that you use in essay comes from extensive reading. You must broaden your scope of general book reading. You need to maintain a register to jot down the Vocabulary that you come across daily along with the context in which it is used. The words you use in essay must convey your idea so it is necessary that you must know the context in which different words are used. You also need to extract good expressions from the texts you read and try to use them whenever you practice writing.

This portion can be covered by extracting Vocabulary from anything that you read be it newspaper,  magazine or a book.


3. Ideas/Knowledge: Your essay needs to be well researched and must contain mature ideas. When you are preparing for css and cover your 11 subjects properly,  you gain enough knowledge/ideas for your essay. But for more authentic and powerful arguments, you need to read as much as possible. You must read latest books by renowned authors. 


4. Essay Structure: Random ideas don't make an essay. Your ideas must be expressed in a well mannered way. You need to learn how an essay is written.  For this portion you can read any good book that guides about basic rules regarding essay writing. I followed essay structure given in Exploring the world of English by Saadat Ali Shah. The basic structure consists of an outline followed by introduction, body and conclusion.
